Module Learning Information

Module Aims:

To provide an understanding of the challenges presented to engineering enterprise by the quest for more sustainable development, together with practical experience in the design and/or realisation of processes responding to that challenge.

As all students taking this module will be on work based programmes a key aim is the understanding of the regulatory framework within which the specific industry operates.

Module Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this module students will be able to:

Describe and discuss the theortical basis of sustainbility as applicable to a business environment. Review and develop a CSR (Corporate and Social Resposibiliy) strategy.

Underake a limited Life Cycle Analysis to assess embedded carbon in systems, products and processes. Assess the energy performance of an oragnisation and/or its products.

Indicative Module Content:

This is a generic module specification. Whilst adhering to the broad principles set out here, the content of any particular delivery of the module will necessarily depend on the selected engineering domain and the learning contract agreed between the programme participant, Aston University and the participant`s professional engineering institution. The module content will focus to some extent on the professional commitment requirements of Commitments E1, E3 and E5 as defined in the Engineering Council UK Specification of Engineering Competence, Third Edition (UK-SPEC).

Illustrative content:

Environmental issues.

Energy and carbon.

Life cycle analysis

Ethical and commercial concerns. Measuring CSR and sustainability. Legislation, regulations and guidelines;

International Dimensions:

The module will place the discussion of sustainability in an Internationale context especially through review of global agreements such as the IPCC outcomes at Kyoto (1997) and Paris (2015).

Corporate Connections:

Projects are all embedded within industrial and/or commercial organisations..

Ethical Approval:

None required.

Links to Research:

Some aspects of the topic will be supported by Aston base research including such areas as Renewable Energy and Storage Systems.

Ethics, Social Responsibility and Sustainability:

See under module content. This module addresses directly these issues.

Module Assessment

Methods of Assessment & associated weighting (including approaches to formative assessment as well as summative):

Method of Submission:

Electronic Copy Only

Assessment Rationale:

In general students taking this module will also have an approved Learning Agreement (an Engineering Council requirement). This agreement will detail assessment rationales for all modules taken. The Learning Agreement gives scope for students to set their own (agreed) assessment deliverable. This should be equivalent to that described in Assessment Type above.

Each submission must contain adequately demonstration of the application of theory to practice, and will be assessed in accordance with the Programme`s assessment criteria which incorporates aspects of "Knowledge and Understanding", "Application" and "Communication". Although not equally weighted all these aspects must be demonstrated to at least a pass level, for the module to be passed.

Feedback Rationale:

Draft copies of written reports and (where appropriate) other formal work products arising from the work-based project(s) will be initially assessed by the student`s Academic Supervisor who will then provide written formative feedback to the student prior, enabling them where necessary to enhance the quality of their submission prior to them finally submitting the work for summative assessment. Describe and discuss the theortical basis of sustainbility as applicable to a business environment. Review and develop a CSR (Corporate and Social Resposibiliy) strategy.

Each piece of assessment work will be blind double marked by both the student`s Academic Supervisor and the Module Leader, or their nominated replacement, in accordance with the Programme`s operating procedures as published in the Student Handbook. Students will be provided with written feedback and given one-to-one feedback from their Academic Supervisor.
