Module outcomes assessed

4. Use a detailed knowledge of the shapes of various sections of the flight vehicle in order to transform given data into novel design solutions for aircraft.

5. Critically evaluate the major design considerations of a modern airplane; engineering professional codes of conduct and ethical conduct in aviation, air worthiness legislation, reliability, operation risks, environmental and commercial risks, health and safety.

Assessment task details - provide a description of the task

This assessment is to design an innovative heavy lift transport aircraft using the methods laid out in Aircraft Design lectures.

This aircraft must carry a cargo of 800 Mirror Segments for the EELT from Hawarden UK, to Santiago, Chile.

The report should include Concept Generation, Thrust to Weight Analysis, Wing Loading Analysis, Mass Estimation, Power plant choice, Aerofoil selection, Wing Geometry, Loading and Unloading of Cargo, Weight and Balance, Cruise Design, and off design point situations including Take-off and Landing analysis. Stability and Control Analysis.

The group will need to show how the concept was generated and selected, and then cover areas highlighted above, either individually working for the team, or concurrently by the team.

For more information – review the Aircraft Design Brief Powerpoint Presentation.

Final hand in - A group design report written in the style of a portfolio based on academic skills, data analysis and experimental design. This report must include a finalised 3 view GA of the optimised Aircraft.

Submission instructions - What should be the format of the submission? / Where should it be submitted?

A single group design report Word or PDF document only, containing your assignment and a reference list. Appendices as applicable. Please submit online via the appropriate turnitin submission on the module space.

Hints and tips

Use your design lecture notes to carry out concept generation and selection on an individual basis, then use this as best design ideas for the group to revaluate to find the best concept. Research existing aircraft data, which can be found linked on Moodle, to evaluate your choice of design points. Document all choices and decisions in the report to show progression of design. Do not be afraid of iteration.
