OVERVIEW This assignment will encourage students to gain an understanding of the business environment in which business operates. DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK – WHAT YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO DO? The submission of a written essay that discusses a business types and functions using a wide variety of research materials (1,500 words). Students are required to produce an essay that examine the different business organisations includes: 1) Select three types of business organisations (e.g. sole proprietorship, limited, cooperative,…etc) and describe three advantages and disadvantages of each of them. 2) Compare and contrast tall and flat structure of an organisation. Make sure you include hospitality and tourism Industry examples in your discussion. 3) Discuss different business functions such as Human Resource Management, Production, Operations, etc. and the impact of their functional management activities on organisations and the people within the organisations. 4) Define organisational culture and explain how positive culture impacts on the success of organisation Essential recommendations Make sure you include hospitality and tourism Industry examples in your discussion. You must reference all information used in the essay, using the Harvard Referencing Guide. Please reference your work according to the Canterbury Harvard style guidance which you can access on Moodle. You must use a minimum of 10 Academic Sources, including Journals, Books and use a variety of academically accepted sources. Make sure you have in-text citations in the body of your Essay, which can be found in your full references list.


Essay Structure Introduction- 150 words Give an overview of what the Essay aims to do. Give a definition of what is a business organisation cited from the core textbook. Explain briefly what will be discussed in the essay. Paragraph 1: 300 Words Define and outline two advantages and disadvantages of any three different types of business, for example: sole trader, partnership, limited company, etc. When defining and outlining advantages and disadvantages of a type of business, ensure that you explain the benefits and drawbacks of that business structure for the business owner. Use the core readings and other academic research for your information. Paragraph 2: 300 words You should define both tall and flat structures, using citations from core text, and elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of each of them. You should use two different tourism organisations to support your writing. All of this section should draw on academic research – do not use google, use Google Scholar. Paragraph 3: 300 words Discuss any two business functions such as Human Resource Management, Production, Operations, etc. and their impact on the culture of the organisation. You can use the same companies you discussed previously. Paragraph 4: 300 words Define organisational culture using well-reputed sources and explain how positive culture impacts the success of the organisation. All your information should come from academic sources. Conclusion: 150 words Your conclusion should be a brief summary of all of the elements covered in the essay. Important! Do not introduce new ideas in your concluding paragraph.

Your work will be assessed on the extent to which it demonstrates your achievement of the stated learning outcomes for this assignment (see above) and against other key criteria, as defined in the University’s institutional grading descriptors. If it is appropriate to the format of your assignment and your subject area, a proportion of your marks will also depend upon your use of academic referencing conventions. This assignment will be marked according to the grading descriptors for Level 0
