LO3:

Critically review an organisation`s strategic plan.

Assignment brief:

Provide a critical examination of the effect of the internal and external environment on the strategic process.  Review the outcome of a change in the internal or external environment affecting a real organisation.

Using relevant theoretical models, you should address the following issues:

  1. An introduction including a definition of strategic management.

Demonstrate that you have reviewed a number of different / alternative definitions here. Provide a critical commentary, if possible, on the ideas set out by various writers / theorists. Ideally, develop and set out your own ‘synthesized’ definition of SM, based on the ideas you have reviewed.

(5 Marks)

  1. A critical assessment of the process used by organisations to determine their strategy.

Use this section to explore the process of SM Use the theoretical models as the framework to discuss the Formulation/Implementation and Review Process) Concentrate on identifying and highlighting critical issues associated with the 5 elements of the process we have spent the bulk of the teaching weeks covering., Demonstrate that you have engaged with multiple sources in compiling your views.

  1. A critical evaluation of the impact of internal and external environmental variation on organisational strategy, (explaining how and why the strategic approach changes).

Use this section to explore the two main approaches (e.g. Lynch’ prescriptive and emergent) Critically evaluate the approaches and discuss causality (why do we need both approaches?). I advise using Mintzberg & Waters Model, modifying it to explain causality. Concentrate on identifying and highlighting critical issues associated with any such perspectives, and demonstrate that you have engaged with multiple sources in compiling your views.

  1. A review of an organisation’s strategic plan (Business Plan), providing an action plan for the organisation on the basis of a change in either the internal OR external environment. . (The Business Plan should be included as an Appendix)

1. Reviewing a strategy document from a real organisation, (Annual Report or Business Plan). This does not need academic sources as it is your review of a strategy.

2. Assume a change in the environmental situation affecting the operation of this strategy (Fuel Price rises/ Covid/ Brecxit). Demonstrate your assessment skills by proposing changes to the strategy by using an action plan.
