This unit considers the role of technology within learning and the use of technology-enabled content and platforms within organisations. It focuses on how data and learning analytics may be utilised by the learning and development function, while exploring the implementation of technological systems and considering the potential barriers to success.

Digital Learning

Digital learning has progressed to cover a wide range of formal course-based e-learning packages and products, together with a huge variety of complementary or alternative techniques, such as sharing knowledge or links to resources via social/interactive media sites and viewing/participating in online lectures, webinars, podcasts or blogs. More recent trends include the development of gaming technology to support learning, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the use of cloud computing, that give the potential to deliver learning according to user needs via the Internet rather than by in-house computing systems. The growth and development of different types of digital learning is rapid and constantly changing.

Learning and skills at work survey 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented upheaval over the past year. As organisations went into survival mode during lockdown, learning and development (L&D) functions were presented with significant challenges. Many faced reduced budgets, changing demands, and not least the sudden switch to full digital delivery as face-to-face learning became restricted.

However, for some organisations and their learning teams, the crisis has proved to be an opportunity: to refresh their alignment with organisational needs, examine the enablers of collaboration and learning, to embrace digital technology and support employee reskilling and redeployment at a time of ongoing workforce disruption.

In this still uncertain climate, our research underscores the need for organisations to be curious, to step outside of their comfort zones and embrace new ways of delivering learning with impact for the digital age.

In your assignments at Level 7 you will be required to achieve the following:

Task 1 – Report

TechCo are a large private sector telecommunications company providing mobile and fixed line B2B and B2C services. TechCo employ C. 2000 colleagues and traditionally around 70% have been based in their head office, with the remaining 30% working remotely in roles such as service engineers.

The landscape is changing, and the market is increasingly competitive. TechCo see an opportunity to revisit their current systems in the wider business to address growing concerns around people and ensuring that the organisation has the right skills in place for the future. eLearning has been a core part of the learning and development provision in TechCo for the past 10 years but there has been little investment in these systems, and it is unknown what L&Ds impact is within the organisation. Data is limited, not helped by the lack of investment in the current LMS. There is also no active management of this system aside from uploading new regulatory courses.

You are one of the People Partners in TechCo and you have been tasked with researching and proposing ways in which TechCo can effectively use technology to enhance its learning offer. Your People Director would like recommended changes to contribute to the following strategic KPIs:

• Improved employee net promoter score
• Reduced turnover
• Increase in future ready skills

Your task is to produce a report for the senior leadership team which outlines your research and recommendations for enhancing the learning and development provision at TechCo.

Your report can be structured under the sections below and must include the following areas:

Section 1

• A discussion of future trends impacting the role of technology within learning. Select two emerging technology trends and assess the extent to which these are being used and the benefits they might bring.
• Present an analysis of how TechCo could best use technology to:
• Assess learning needs
• Design and deliver learning
• Assess the impact of learning

Section 2

• Critically evaluate how technological systems are used in three different organisations and how they support learning in each instance.

• Using the same examples and/or other research examples, assess the impact of different learning media and delivery on participant engagement.

• Based on your analysis so far, develop a set of recommendations for TechCo with clear rationale for your choices.

Section 3

• Present an implementation plan and critically discuss:
• The key stages of the implementation process
• The barriers which TechCo might face and your suggestions on how to mitigate against these.
• Justify your thinking using wider reading.

Your report is aimed at the senior leadership team and should be professionally laid out and include a wide range of research, analysis and original thinking. It is important you use your word count carefully and ensure your answers follow the assessment principles laid out on page 3.

Task 2 – Briefing Paper

Your People Director would like a briefing paper with recommended changes based on the following areas:

• Discuss the ways in which learning analytics and metrics can improve the effectiveness of learning and development.

• Determine appropriate data sources and metrics which TechCo could use to achieve improved effectiveness.

Your briefing paper is aimed at the senior leadership team and should be professionally laid out and include a wide range of research, analysis and original thinking. It is important you use your word count carefully and ensure your answers follow the assessment principles laid out on page 3. LO1 Understand major technological developments and their impact upon the design and practice of learning and development

Your evidence must consist of:

• Briefing Paper (1,000 words)

Assessment Grading

You will receive either a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Refer/Fail result at unit level.

The grid below shows the range of results you could achieve based on total number of marks awarded across all assessment criteria.

To pass the unit assessment you must achieve a Pass or above for each of the learning outcomes.

The overall result achieved will dictate the outcome you receive for the unit, provided

NONE of the assessment criteria have been failed or referred.
